The Importance of Re-Keying Your Home

Keeping Your Ex Out Of Your House: What You Can Do

A breakup is never fun, but things get even more hectic if you split ways and you've both been living under the same roof. If you want to make sure your ex doesn't enter your home, especially when you aren't home, there are things you can do to keep them out. This guide explains what you can do to keep your ex away from your home.

Get new locks

Even if your ex has turned their key in, they still may have a spare key that you don't know about. Have a locksmith come to your home to change your locks, placing a deadbolt on your front and back doors. If you are worried about your ex trying to get in via a window or basement opening, have your locksmith place interior locks on these areas.

You can also change the locks on your vehicle if you and your ex have both driven your car. Car door locks are easy to replace, and your locksmith can perform this extra procedure for you in the same day they change your door locks. When making an appointment with your locksmith, let them know you plan on having your car locks changed as well so they can bring the proper tools with them.

Remove their name from your rental agreement

If you own your home and your ex is not on the deed, then you don't need to take any further action. The house is yours, and their presence on your property without your permission is trespassing. Otherwise, you may need to take them to court to create a buyout agreement to put the home in your name. If you rent and they are on the lease, you can talk to your landlord about having them removed from your rental agreement. This can be done with or without your ex's permission, especially if they have moved out of the property. You may want to also have a 'hold-harmless' clause added to your rental agreement which protects you from liability for any damages or unpaid rent that were caused by your ex.

A separation is never an easy thing to have to go through. To protect yourself and your property, you will want to have a locksmith company like Key West Locksmiths Ltd, change your locks. You will also want to make sure that your ex doesn't have any legal right to your property. Make sure you do these two things, and you can feel more secure in your home no matter how bad your breakup was.
